Welfare to Work – Expansion of vocational education and training to support participation

Why is the Government providing additional vocational education and training places for parents, older workers and people with a disability? The Government is providing additional training places under the welfare reform package for parents, older workers and people with a disability, so that they can undertake accredited training to update their skills or gain new skills.

This will ensure that parents, older workers and people with a disability have access to high quality training that is recognised by employers across Australia to improve their employment opportunities.

When will the additional places be available? Funding for the additional places for people with a disability will commence from January 2006. Funding for additional places for parents and older workers will commence from July 2006.
How many training places will this provide? The Government is providing $42.6 million over three years for up to 12,300 additional vocational education and training places for parents and older workers.

The Government is also redirecting $43.3 million from its 2002-03 welfare reform package Recognising and Improving the Capacity of People with a Disability to provide an additional 7,600 vocational education and training places for people with a disability.

How can I access these additional training places? The additional funds will be included in the Australian Government’s offer to the States and Territories for a new Commonwealth-State Agreement for Skilling Australia’s Workforce.
