TASMANIA SIGNS: WHAT’S WRONG WITH SOUTH AUSTRALIA, ACT AND NEW SOUTH WALES?
16 September 2005
Minister for Vocational and Technical Education, the Hon Gary Hardgrave MP, today announced the Australian Government has written to all States and the Territory that have not signed the new 2005-08 Commonwealth-State Agreement for Skilling Australia’s Workforce, restating that until they sign, federal funding cannot be released.
“Today’s letter to the States and the Territory that have not signed up to the agreement draws the line in the sand. The remaining States and Territory must accept the Australian Government’s offer as soon as possible, as funding cannot be released under the Skilling Australia’s Workforce Act 2005 unless there is an Agreement in place,” Mr Hardgrave said.
“The Australian Government is not going to continue to fund States and Territories for vocational and technical education without their commitment to bring their training systems up to scratch.
“Already Queensland, Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Victoria and Tasmania have committed to a strong national training system – the others are being left behind.
“Those who have signed have shown they are keen to have a modern training system which positively responds to the needs of clients, industry and business.
“If the offer is not accepted by 7 October 2005, the Government will have no alternative but to commence development of an alternative funding model for training delivery in those jurisdictions.
“I therefore call upon those States and the Territory that have not accepted the Government’s offer to now do so.
“It is paramount that we all work together to build a truly national training system to produce the highly skilled labour force needed to sustain Australia’s economic prosperity,” Mr Hardgrave concluded.
