$1.5 MLLION BOOST FOR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH LINKS WITH ASIA
27 January 2005
Sixty-eight Australian undergraduate students will live and study in Asia in 2006, while the same number of Asian students will come to Australia, following the awarding of 136 student scholarships by the Australian Government and the Cheung Kong Group.
The Australian Government will commit $680,000 for the 2006 round of the Australian Cheung Kong Student Exchange Programme, supporting the exchange of students between 25 Australian institutions and 42 counterpart institutions in Asia.
A further $825,000 will be committed to the Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Awards Postgraduate Programme, providing 13 Australian researchers with scholarships to travel to Asia and bringing 20 Asian researchers to Australia. Each researcher will receive up to $25,000 to enable them to undertake four to six months’ research in Asia and Australia.
The Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Scholarship Programme is jointly sponsored by the Government and the Hong Kong-based Cheung Kong Group, with a total of $4.5 million pledged in matching funds over a 3-year period.
I thank the Cheung Kong Group whose efforts are inspired by its desire to give something back to the communities of Australia and Asia, and thank the Group for its generosity and leadership in corporate philanthropy in the higher education sector.
I am also pleased to announce the ten outstanding scholars from Malaysia and Australia that will receive awards enabling them to undertake study or research overseas as part of the Australian Government’s $1.5 million Endeavour Awards for Malaysia programme.
The six recipients of Endeavour Malaysia Awards will receive funding of up to $50,000 for the first year of a higher degree, or for research towards a higher degree in their home country.
The four recipients of the Endeavour Malaysia Research Fellowships will receive up to $25,000 to undertake research in the other nation.
I am particularly pleased to note that four of the 2006 awards are linked to the International Islamic University of Malaysia, one of Malaysia’s finest universities. Two of that institution’s scholars will travel to Australia to undertake study, and two of the Australian recipients will undertake further study at the International Islamic University of Malaysia.
I wish all scholarship and award recipients every success and hope that once their research, study or exchange is completed, they depart their host nation with a better understanding of the country and its people.
These scholarships and awards are funded as part of the Australian Government’s $92 million Endeavour Programme, which promotes international social and economic understanding through establishing ongoing links between Australian students, teachers and universities and their overseas counterparts.
The Howard Government is committed to seeing that international education and research exchanges foster closer personal ties, cultural understanding and tolerance, all of which are particularly important for increasing the social and economic development of the Asia Pacific region.
