CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS- NATIONAL REVIEW OF SCHOOL MUSIC EDUCATION

20 December 2004 MIN 1037/04

Today I have called for submissions from interested parties for the National Review of School Music Education.

I announced the Review earlier this year to investigate the quality and status of music education in our schools and how we can increase these for the benefit of all students.

Murdoch University’s Centre for Learning, Change and Development (CLCD) is leading an expert team to undertake the Review, which will identify:

  • The current quality of teaching and learning of music in Australian schools;
  • Factors that affect the quality and status of teaching of music in Australian schools; and
  • Examples of best practice of teaching and learning of music both in Australian schools and schools overseas.

Music provides powerful learning experiences for children, offering them the opportunity to express themselves creatively, while also assisting in the development of other skills and competencies.

The inquiry is seeking input from teachers, parents, students, musicians and the wider community to help provide a personal and detailed insight into school music education.

Submissions can either be structured to allow respondents to answer questions provided by the Review team, or open allowing for more in-depth responses. Views are sought on issues including the current quality of music education in Australian schools, the variety of extracurricular activities, opportunities for instrumental music tuition and examples of best-practice in music education.

I encourage interested parties to take this opportunity to make a submission and share their opinions on music education in our schools.

Submissions can be made on-line or in written form. Submissions will close at COB April 30, 2005. For more information visit http://www.schoolmusicreview.edu.au/ which is hosted by Murdoch University’s Centre for Learning, Change and Development.

Over the next four years, the Howard Government will provide $700 million in grants paid directly to state school communities, parent bodies and principals for the improvement of facilities within the school. Projects to be funded include, among other things, music facilities and instruments.
