$143 MILLION BOOST FOR CAREERS ADVICE TO YOUNG AUSTRALIANS

10 May 2005 MINBUD 15/05

Careers advice for young Australians will be significantly improved through a $143.2 million investment by the Howard Government to establish the Australian Network of Industry Careers Advisers (ANICA).

Following on from the Government’s election commitment to create ANICA, this funding allocation for the next five years will assist young Australians aged 13 to 19 make a successful transition from school to work, or from school to further study.

Advice and support will be provided through a network of Local Community Partnerships bringing together schools, TAFEs, universities, local business, parents and community representatives. Through this approach ANICA will:

  • enable more informed career choices by young people;
  • raise school retention levels and increase student engagement;
  • increase industry and employer engagement in schools and career development;
  • promote the range of vocational education and training pathways; and
  • improve the quality and availability of career and transition education across Australia.

Under ANICA, funding of $2 million each year will be provided to improve the quality of careers advice and recognition of career practitioners by: providing scholarships for career advisers to undertake study and industry placements; supporting career advisers’ and principals’ forums; funding career education "Lighthouse Schools" projects; and expanding professional development opportunities for career advisers.

Funding of around $22 million each year will also be provided to Local Community Partnerships to ensure young people have a full understanding of the career choices available to them, especially opportunities that local vocational education and training options offer, as well as careers that can be pursued through university study. Local Community Partnerships will also receive around $4.6 million annually to deliver ‘Adopt a School’ projects that promote greater local business involvement in school learning programmes.

Through Local Community Partnerships and schools, young people will have access to professional career advice from industry experts. Funding of around $6 million annually will support a network of Regional Industry Career Advisers and will provide a comprehensive understanding of regional industry skills needs and local opportunities.

The Howard Government is committed to helping all young Australians find and achieve their potential.
