$2 MILLION FOR IT UPGRADE AT CHARLES DARWIN
UNIVERSITY
10 May 2005 MINBUD 20/05
IT infrastructure at Charles Darwin University will
be significantly boosted with today’s announcement that the
Australian Government will provide $2 million over three years for
upgrading works.
This project will improve the University’s
administration systems, its online education and flexible delivery
mechanisms, strengthen its communication services and upgrade
services relating to the security, storage and backup of
information.
This funding is in addition to the $2.4 million
already committed to improved communications bandwidth for Northern
Territory higher education institutions.
Charles Darwin University provides almost 85% of all
vocational education and training and higher education delivery in
the Northern Territory, and the development of a comprehensive and
flexible online system is important to the University in reaching
regional students.
The University also has a number of campuses.
Improvements to its online delivery and administration capability,
in conjunction with other bandwidth developments, will increase
student access to vocational and higher education at all campuses
and for all disciplines.
This measure is part of the Australian Government’s
election commitment supporting the enhancement of communications and
information technology in the Northern Territory, which includes the
extension of mobile phone coverage and the establishment of the
Higher Bandwidth Incentive Scheme (HiBIS) to provide people in
regional, rural and remote Australia with access to affordable
broadband services.
