$13 MILLION TO HELP COUNTRY FAMILIES WITH SCHOOL
HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION
10 May 2005 MINBUD 27/05
Families living in rural and remote areas will
benefit from more affordable schooling options for their children
with the Howard Government providing a $13.1 million funding boost
for the Non-Government School Term Hostels Programme.
Not every family living in rural or remote regions
in Australia wants to, nor is able to, send their children to
boarding school.
The Programme is targeted at not-for-profit,
non-government school term hostels that operate principally to
accommodate primary and secondary students from rural and remote
areas of Australia.
This initiative will assist non-government hostels
to provide a high standard of care to rural primary and secondary
school students residing at the hostels during school term. This
five year initiative will also support rural communities by
providing an affordable alternative to boarding school or distance
education for rural and remote families.
Under the Non-Government School Term Hostels
Programme, eligible hostels will attract a grant of $2,500 per year,
per eligible student.
This funding fulfils a key election commitment and
underlines the Howard Government’s strong commitment to rural and
regional families by providing more choice and opportunity in
education.
