MEDIA RELEASE
STRENGTHENING THE HUMANITIES, ARTS AND SOCIAL
SCIENCES
13 May 2003 MIN 348/03
The contribution of the humanities and social
sciences will be enhanced by the establishment of a new Council for
the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
The humanities, arts and social sciences are
critically important to the future development of Australia.
Not only do they play a key role in supporting the
national innovation system, they make a significant contribution to
the development of our society, culture and individual identity. It
is from this sector especially that the soul is passed from one
generation to the next.
Complementing Budget initiatives in the higher
education reform package, Our Universities: Backing Australia’s
Future, funding for the new Council for the Humanities, Arts and
Social Sciences will facilitate greater constructive engagement
between these important disciplines and governments and the broader
community.
It is envisaged that the Council will help to
strengthen the importance of the role of the humanities, arts and
social sciences in Australia, and provide a forum within which
academics, students and the broader community can discuss key
issues.
The Commonwealth will provide seed funding of
$200,000 to the Council in 2003.
