MEDIA RELEASE

NATIONAL AWARDS FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE

16 May, 2003 MIN 354/03

Today I am delighted to present the 2003 National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTAs) to 32 outstanding Australian teachers.

The awards celebrate the achievements of teachers who make a positive difference to the lives of their students and whose passion and professionalism have been recognised by their school and local community.

The teachers honoured today include five pre-school, 15 primary and 12 secondary teachers from both government and non-government schools in all States and Territories. They work in metropolitan, rural and remote settings, and in many different areas of education, including literacy, numeracy, music and information technology.

All of today’s winners demonstrate the same essential qualities – highly developed knowledge and skills combined with commitment, creativity and compassion.

This presentation marks the 10th anniversary of the NEiTAs. I commend the Australian Scholarships Group and the NEiTA Foundation for establishing these prestigious awards and for the part they have played in recognising and promoting excellence in teaching.

The Commonwealth Government sees awards for excellence as an important way to strengthen the status and quality of teaching and offers a number of its own such awards to support this. These include the new National Awards for Quality Schooling, announced in March this year. The inaugural presentation of these awards for teachers, schools and school leaders, with an annual prize pool of up to $1 million, will be in November.

I congratulate the 32 teachers who today have been awarded NEiTAs. Their inspiring stories affirm the great work they and other teachers perform each day. There are few more powerful ways to build a better future than to teach a child to communicate, think and achieve their full potential.

Details of the awardees are attached. Presentation photographs and details of all awardees will be available from the website www.neita.com.au from 17 May 2003.
