MEDIA RELEASE
$480,000 TO BOOST GENOMICS EDUCATION
12 November, 2002 MIN 228h/02
I am pleased to announce $480,000 in Commonwealth funding to
James Cook University (JCU), in Townsville to expand its genomics
and biomedical technologies courses.
This funding will help JCU integrate the latest research in
genomics and the mapping of diseases into its science, medical and
health curricula.
The Comparative Genomics Centre at JCU is a medical research
centre that studies genes and genetics.
The Centre aims to address some of the severe health issues in
tropical Australia, such as diabetes, and autoimmune diseases in
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
This funding means JCU can now also provide genomics
lectureships, resources and laboratory equipment.
Courses will be interactively delivered via the internet at
undergraduate and postgraduate level.
The Centre will undertake vital research into the genetics of
yeast, coral, fruit fly, mice and humans to identify molecules and
find the roles they play in human diseases.
The funding has been made available from the Higher Education
Innovation Programme.
