MEDIA RELEASE
Traditional trades on the decline in NSW, Victoria,
Tasmania and South Australia
15 November, 2002, MIN 237/02
At the meeting of State, Territory and Federal Training Ministers
being held in Sydney today, it has been revealed that four states
appear to be planning to reduce the number of places for courses at
TAFE or with private providers in some of the key traditional
trades.
This is a very disturbing revelation. These are areas where I
would have hoped to see growth in response to industry demands.
New Apprenticeships have been a major success story of the Howard
Government.
362,000 New Apprentices are in training, providing valuable
opportunities for predominately young Australians, with 107,000
completions last year alone.
Traditional trades are an important component and make up 38% of
the total.
However documents tabled by the States at today’s meeting reveal
a disturbing trend across four states.
