MEDIA RELEASE
TRAINING EXCELLENCE AT WORLDSKILLS AUSTRALIA
25 October 2002 MIN 221/02
The WorldSkills Australia competition beginning in Newcastle
today showcases the excellence of Australia’s vocational education
system.
WorldSkills Australia 2002 brings together more than 600 young
Australians from across the country to compete in various trade
categories. All six hundred finalists have competed at the regional
and state level and are now competing to represent their country at
the International Skills Olympics in St Gallen, Switzerland in June
next year.
The Commonwealth Government has provided $500,000 through the
Australian National Training Authority, to coordinate the regional
and national competitions.
WorldSkills Australia challenges young people, their teachers,
trainers and employers to achieve excellence and to promote the
value and status of vocational education and training.
It is a great opportunity for young people to compete against
each other in a spirit of sharing, comparing and development.
This popular contest promotes and encourages excellence in the
vocational and education and training system.
WorldSkills Australia 2002 incorporates the National VET in
Schools Finals, a competition for year 11 students who are
undertaking vocational education as part of their secondary studies.
Visitors to this event can access career information and advice
at the WorldSkills Expo. The Expo features more than 100 trade
exhibits with industry representatives on hand to discuss careers
issues for young people and older workers interested in retraining.
