MEDIA RELEASE
AUSTRALIA TO HOST OLYMPIC GAMES IN BIOLOGY
8 September 2003 MIN 454/03
I am pleased today to announce funding of $355,000
to support the hosting of the 15th International Biology Olympiad in
Brisbane in July next year.
The Olympiad is being hosted in Australia by the Rio
Tinto Australian Science Olympiads, the University of Queensland,
Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University.
The Australian Government is proud to join these
institutions in supporting this prestigious event and by doing so,
supporting the best science students in Australia.
The 2004 International Biology Olympiad (IBO) will
attract around 50 teams of secondary school students from all over
the world to compete in examinations at the first and second year
university level.
The Olympiad will strengthen relationships,
re-affirm friendships and celebrate the future contributions these
outstanding students have to offer.
Each year, Australian students perform in
International Science Olympiads, consistently winning gold, silver
and bronze medals. Just this year, the four-member Australian team
competing in the 2003 IBO in Belarus was placed 7th out of 41
countries.
This significant event will be a unique opportunity
to focus international attention on the success of Australian
students and promote Australian excellence in science education.
