Calls for submissions to the Inquiry were published in national newspapers
on 4 December 2004 and 12 February 2005. These calls provided an opportunity
for parents, teachers, educators and others interested in the teaching of
literacy to contribute to the Inquiry. The Inquiry received a total of 453
submissions from a range of organisations, including: State and Territory
government and non-government education authorities; teacher and health
professional associations; industry bodies; peak parent, principal, teacher
and union bodies; commercial organisations that provide reading materials
and support of various kinds; as well as a diverse group of individuals. All
submissions were provided to the Committee of Inquiry and, except for those
identified as ‘confidential’, have been made available on this site website.
The submissions provided a valuable source of information and viewpoints for
the Committee to consider in reporting findings and developing
recommendations. Introduction
