Our strategic framework

A strategic framework is important to everyone in the Department. The Government’s policy agenda is complex and diverse. Using a framework will help us better understand how our teams fit into the big picture as well as placing our priorities in context.

No matter where we work in the Department, we are contributing to Australia’s Prosperity and Wellbeing thereby touching the lives of every Australian. We aim to help all Australians make the most of their lives and opportunities – be it through building Australia’s skills base or developing new ways of understanding and interacting with the world through science and innovation.

In the 2005-08 Strategic Plan, our focus is also on the here and now, so that we have a solid platform from which we can shape the future. In building National Capability we need to concentrate on achieving success in three areas; Learning, Skills Acquisition and building Australia’s Knowledge:

  • Learning is at the core of the Department’s work – all staff contribute, from those working in the schools and higher education groups to those in the information and  communications technology areas;
  • Skills acquisition is at the forefront of preparing Australia for the challenges ahead – again, it is not only those staff working in the vocational and technical education areas who contribute;
  • Building Knowledge, including Australia’s research infrastructure, is especially relevant for those involved in research, science and innovation – it also touches all staff in the Department as we constantly need to update our own skills.

We can only build National Capability through endorsing a strong blueprint for future growth. To deliver the Government’s policy agenda and achieve our own internal goals, the Department must, over the next three years, use its current strong performance to further its policy and organisational goals and deliver quality results.
