Budget fact sheet - Increased Residential Support for Australian Apprentices


Eligible New Apprentices who have had to leave home to take up or remain in a New Apprenticeship will be able to access a third year of the Living Away from Home Allowance at the rate of $25.00 per week.

This initiative will apply to those New Apprentices who have had to leave their parent’s or guardian’s home to take up or remain in a New Apprenticeship, or receive essential supplementary on-the-job training with another employer.

The Living Away from Home Allowance is also paid where the New Apprentice is homeless.

For a New Apprentice to be eligible for the Living Away from Home Allowance, the employer of the New Apprentice must be eligible to attract incentives.

A New Apprentice is not eligible to claim the Living Away from Home Allowance if they receive rental or accommodation assistance from another source, or if they receive Youth Allowance.

The extension of the Living Away from Home Allowance to eligible third year New Apprentices will came into effect from 1 July 2005.
New Apprenticeships Centres are contracted by the Australian Government to administer the New Apprenticeships Incentives Programme. The Centres will assess a New Apprentice’s eligibility for this allowance.
