Budget fact sheet - The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence

The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence will promote the quality of trade skills training and the status and profile of careers in the trades. The Australian Government will provide $22.9 million over four years to establish the Institute for Trade Skills Excellence.

The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence will be industry-led through involvement of peak industry bodies, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Business Council of Australia, Australian Industry Group and the National Farmers’ Federation.

The Institute will also work with other industry bodies such as industry associations, Industry Skills Councils and other relevant industry experts.

The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence will be proactive in promoting trade skills excellence and raising the status and value of trades skills training to the wider Australian community, especially in those trade areas experiencing skill shortages.

The Institute will identify and reward excellence by providing industry recognition of excellence in trade skills training conducted by registered training organisations; endorsing the trade qualifications issued to New Apprentices completing their training with these providers; providing teaching excellence awards of $10,000 in 20 trades each year; and undertaking targeted promotional activity aimed at improving the quality of trade training and elevating the status of traditional trades.
The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence was established in the second half of 2005.
