Description
On 4 March 2002, the former Howard Government announced 23 Career and Transition (CAT) Pilot projects to be funded across Australia for one year. The CAT Pilot forms part of the ongoing response to The former Prime Minister Howard's Youth Pathways Action Plan Taskforce Report, Footprints to the Future, which was released in May 2001.
The CAT Pilot investigates, implements and evaluates innovative ways of improving the quality of career information and advice to all young people including students and those who have left school. The Pilot has been designed to enhance, complement and build upon existing career and transition services in local communities. The aim is to bring these services together and develop new strategies in order to deliver timely, accurate and relevant information to young people.
One of the key components of the Pilot is the funding of CAT advisers. These advisers are dedicated to the provision of quality career and transition support to young people aged 13-19 years. The CAT adviser assists young people to explore a range of career options and to develop a range of pathways to obtain their goals. A primary responsibility of the CAT adviser is the development and implementation of a Learning Pathways Plan. These plans are flexible documents which set out the goals of a young person and outline the strategies required to achieve these goals.
CAT projects have also developed a Community Partnership Committee to oversee the project. The membership of the committee includes members of the local community who can use their expertise to provide support and advice for the project.
As of January 2004 there are twenty CAT Pilot projects in selected regions across Australia that will continue to operate until December 2005.
