Masters courses approval for the payment of student income support
The 2007-08 Budget extended eligibility for student income support (Youth Allowance and Austudy) to students undertaking certain professionally oriented coursework masters degrees.
Following the development and approval of Guidelines, higher education providers were invited to submit applications for approval of their masters courses. Courses were assessed on the basis that they are required for professional entry, are the only professional-entry courses offered by a university following restructure, or provide the fastest pathway to professional entry.
The Hon Julia Gillard MP, Minister for Education, approved the courses and issued the attached Determination under the Student Assistance Act 1973 (see Eligibility section above). Schedule 3 of the Determination lists the approved masters by coursework programs.
Students who have queries about masters courses and their income support entitlements should contact Centrelink on 13 2490 for further information.
