Structured Workplace Learning Student destination survey 2003
This report examines the destinations of school leavers who had participated in the Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) programme funded by the Australian Government through the former Enterprise & Career Education Foundation (ECEF). The analysis is based on a survey of SWL participants who left school in 2002.
Abstract
Between April and June 2003, the former Enterprise and Career Education Foundation (ECEF) conducted its fourth annual Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) programme student destination survey. The survey ascertained the labour market and education and training destinations of school leavers who had participated in SWL programmes in either Year 11 or Year 12, and who left school in 2002. Responses were collected from 14,482 students, who were asked about the nature of their study while at school; whether they were studying or working at the time of the survey; and whether SWL had helped them attain their post-school destination.
Findings indicate that there has been an increase in the proportion of SWL participants going on to full-time study (from 36.2% in 2000 to 38.3% in 2003), particularly university. While the proportion going into full-time employment has decreased, 35.5% of SWL participants were in full-time employment in 2003. Almost one in five respondents were doing a traineeship or apprenticeship, representing 41.2% of those in either full-time or part-time employment. 7.3% of respondents were unemployed, and 3% were not in the labour force.
In general, the findings confirm the positive role played by SWL programmes in supporting the transition of young people to a wide variety of career destinations.
