Gaining entrance to a tertiary institution was the most popular response to the question about what it would take for the PAL students to feel that they have succeeded after their year’s study, nearly a quarter of them identifying this outcome. However, if taken together, completion of the program and satisfactory completion of the program account for just over a quarter of the students’ responses. Significantly the next most popular factor identified as crucial to feeling successful (18 per cent) was having developed, been challenged, and developed their knowledge, the popularity of this response resonating with the emphasis on personal development amongst the motivations for enrolling in the course, and the identification of knowledge, mental stimulation, and the challenge to their minds etc as the most enjoyable aspects of the program for many students. Gaining high grades, obtaining employment in a chosen field and enjoying the program are mentioned about the same number of times, together accounting for the remaining third of the responses.
