Career intentions of Australian law students [EIP 95/2]

In this project, undergraduate law students in all Australian law schools were asked to indicate why they chose to study law at university and what career/s they intended to follow upon completion of their law degree.

This research was funded under the Evaluations and Investigations Programme (EIP).

Abstract

The report discusses six options for graduating students, and the choices which students may make.  These include taking up a legally related career in the public sector,  pursuing a career unrelated to law, going directly to the bar, being admitted and practising law, being admitted and then taking up a career outside law, or not being admitted and taking up or maintaining a career outside law.

By studying undergraduates career intentions, more effective plans may be made for the practical training system.
