Factors impacting on student aspirations and expectations in regional Australia [EIP 04/01]

This report investigates the aspirations of rural students in Australia. It identifies motivational factors and possible barriers and recommends strategies to support and enhance their goals.

Abstract

Through interviews between students, parents and teachers in 15 schools across Australia, this study set out to provide a better understanding of the aspirations and expectations of students in regional areas of Australia.  It sought to identify the underlying factors that drive those aspirations and expectations, particularly the ones which differentiate students in regional areas from their urban counterparts.  It considered barriers that might hinder students’ pursuit of their aspirations, and strategies that have proven effective in enhancing and sustaining the aspirations and expectations of students in regional areas.  The report recommends that teachers continue to inform students of continuing education about 'New Times' and its consequences.  The education systems need to continue to track the demographics and outcomes on student choices related to academic or vocational and education courses.  Schools need to maintain and expand opportunities for students to widen their life experiences and broaden their opportunities (including promoting and expanding partnerships with industry and community initiatives which increase the level of skills and knowledge of students), and expand curriculum choice by rationalising resources and capitalising on the use of ICTs.  Further research into this topic is necessary to determine whether other factors are associated with students realising their aspirations and expectations for further education and training.  Governments should also consider the issue of equity scholarships for students in rural and remote regions of Australia.  This research was funded under the Evaluations and Investigations Programme (EIP).
