Obtaining data from the Higher Education Statistics Collections

Data from the most recent student collection (2007) is available in the form of aggregated datasets. There are three datasets available - student enrolments 2007student load 2007 and course completions 2007. Each of these datasets is in a zip file.  The specifications for each field in each dataset are described in the  Student Help File.

Other tailor-made datasets can be produced from the student collection to meet user requirements. These datasets are normally provided as fixed-format flat ASCII files, but they can be produced in other formats such as spreadsheets. They can be distributed electronically, on CD or floppy disk. Charges will be incurred for these products.

Tabulations can also be generated to meet the needs of data users who are less able to undertake analyses from raw data. Output can be in printed format or as spreadsheets. Charges will be incurred for these products.

Data from the 2008 staff collection is available in the form of an aggregated dataset. This dataset contains data for full-time, fractional full-time and estimated casual staff. The specifications for each field in each dataset are described in the Staff Help File.

Previous years datasets contain data for full-time, fractional full-time, estimated casual and actual casual staff.

These previous years datasets are self extracting zip archives. The specifications for each field in each dataset is provided within the Higher Education Staff Collection Documentation.

Data in spreadsheet format can be supplied from the Finance Collection and the Research Expenditure Collection.
The type of data available can be seen from the specifications for each of the collections.

People requiring tailor-made datasets, analyses or spreadsheets should indicate their requirements through email, fax or letter. Precise requirements will be determined in consultation with the client. A written quotation will be provided for your authorisation prior to commencement of any work.

While the cost is negotiable, the average charge for basic requests is about $90.00. Please be aware that due to the large number of customised requests received they will usually take between 2-3 weeks to be produced.

No work will be undertaken until approval to proceed is given.
