Indigenous education

The Whole of School Intervention Strategy (WoSI) involves communities and parents working with schools and other organisations to improve the educational outcomes of Indigenous school students. The WoSI Strategy is made up of two elements; the Parent School Partnerships Initiative (PSPI) and Homework Centre (HWC). Funding rounds are usually held twice a year, with closing dates of 31 March and 31 August each year.

Indigenous Education Programmes 2005-2008

The SRA Performance Indicator Handbooks, 2005 - 2008 are now available. The information contained in the Handbooks updates the previous suite of performance indicators for the current quadrennium and are aligned to the indicators used in online reporting through INDIGO.

National Report to Parliamnet on Indigenous Education and Training, 2004

The National Report to Parliament on Indigenous Education and Training, 2004 is the fourth in a series of annual reports to the Australian Parliament that tracks progress in Indigenous education and training and discusses issues under the major goals of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy (AEP).

Preschool Profile - Indigenous Education

The Preschool Profile is a key tool in the monitoring process of educational outcomes and progress for students in their preschool years.

Community Festivals for Education Engagement are aimed at encouraging young people, in particular Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to stay at school and complete year 12 and obtain a certificate, build self esteem through participation, and explore options for further studies and/or careers. This is done in a way that resonates with contemporary youth culture.

The World Indigenous Peoples Conference: Education (WIPC:E) is an internationally significant triennial conference attracting Indigenous people around the world to celebrate and share diverse cultures, traditions and knowledge with a focus on Indigenous education.

The Australian Government’s 2007 Budget provided $15.1 million over four years for the conversion of up to 200 Community Development Employment Project (CDEP) positions into real jobs with education providers in urban and major regional centres from 1 July 2007.

Under this measure, funding is provided to government and non–government preschools, schools and TAFE providers for the employment of Indigenous Australians in a range of jobs, including as Indigenous Education Workers.  The measure is designed to both create real jobs for Indigenous Australians and improve the educational outcomes of the local Indigenous community.  Further details.

The Endeavour Research Fellowships for Indigenous Australians provide financial support for Indigenous postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows to undertake short-term research, in any field of study, in participating outgoing countries.
The Indigenous Youth Mobility Program (IYMP) is providing opportunities for young Indigenous people from remote Australia to move to a major centre to participate in pre-vocational training, Australian Apprenticeships, Certificate Courses and University courses such as those leading to nursing, teaching, accounting and business management qualifications.

Indigenous Staff Scholarships are available for Indigenous staff at universities to undertake further academic or professional study.
