Indigenous participation in higher education

Indigenous people are under-represented in higher education, despite improvements over the last decade. Indigenous students represent 1.2 percent of the domestic student population, but represent 1.9 percent of the Australian population.

The Department of Education, Science and Training administers programmes that:

  • are aimed at increasing Indigenous participation in higher education
  • encourage greater Indigenous involvement in higher education policy development
  • provide additional financial assistance to higher education institutions to improve outcomes for Indigenous people.

These include the Indigenous Support ProgrammeIndigenous Staff Scholarships and the Indigenous Higher Education Advisory Council
