National report to Parliament on Indigenous education and training, 2001

This is the first annual national report to Parliament in relation to Indigenous education and training. This report seeks to give an account of what we, as a nation, have achieved in the critically important area of Indigenous education in 2001.

Abstract

This report is the first of a series of annual National Reports to Parliament under the Indigenous Education (Targeted Assistance) Act 2000.  It focuses on the education and training outcomes in 2001 of the Indigenous Education Strategic Initiatives Programme (IESIP) which funds over 90% of Indigenous students in education and training in Australia.  It is a baseline report against which future outcomes and improvements can be measured and will enable education providers to consider their own progress in the national context for the first time.  In this first report the focus is on activity in the year 2001.

The report considers the four main sectors of education and training in Australia (preschool, schooling, vocational education and training, and higher education), and provides introductory information, data and discussion on Indigenous presence, involvement and influence.  The key areas of enrolments and educational outcomes are presented, including attendance rates across preschool, school and VET (Vocational Education and Training) sectors.  In each case, outcome areas are presented in line with the national data collections and measurements, in accordance with Section 17A of the Act.  Progress information on the National Indigenous English Literacy and Numeracy Strategy (NIELNS) and information on payments made under agreements under the Act in 2001 are also provided.
