These projects offer the opportunity for Australian students in higher education and VET to undertake a period of study at a partner institution in the European Union.

Further information is available. Applications close on 6 June 2008.

The “Australians – Study in Europe!” (ASiE  You are now leaving the DEST website) website was relaunched on 30 May 2008 after a substantial revision and upgrade.

The Brisbane Communiqué initiative was launched at the inaugural Asia-Pacific Education Ministers’ Meeting in Brisbane, Australia on 3-4 April 2006.  Ministers and senior officials from twenty-seven countries across the region issued the Brisbane Communiqué PDF Document (47.1 KB) in which they agreed to collaborate on key goals related to quality assurance, the recognition of educational and professional qualifications, competency based standards for teachers and common recognition of technical skills in the broader Asia-Pacific region.

The Brisbane Communique Initiative website provides you with information on the developments of the Brisbane Communiqué initiative, leading up to the second Asia-Pacific Education Ministers’ Meeting.

In 2005 DEST commissioned a review of the three rounds of EU/Australia Cooperation in Higher Education and VET projects.  One outcome of the review was a good practice guide for establishing academic relationships and student mobility with European partners PDF Document  (326 KB).  Available on our website since 2006, this guide is based on feedback from the three projects and provides tips on how to establish a good cooperative relationship and student mobility with European partners.  This guide may prove useful to applicants for EU-Australia cooperation projects and others seeking to build links with Europe.

The European Union (EU) and Australia have officially announced the successful applicants for the fourth round of cooperation projects in higher education and vocational education and training projects.

These projects aim to increase academic cooperation and student mobility between Australia and the EU.  They are building on three prior rounds of student mobility projects.

The previous Australian Government and the European Commission have each committed $1.7 million (AUD) to the fourth round of the programme.

The four projects jointly funded by the Australian Government and the European Commission range from studies in international relations and security to developing environmental sustainability programmes.

The Bologna Process involves forty-five European countries undertaking a series of reforms in order to achieve greater consistency and portability across their higher education systems. The prospect of greater mobility for students and broader recognition of qualifications across Europe may have significant implications for Australia in relation to both domestic and international students. On the following website, you will find the paper, The Bologna Process and Australia: Next Steps, released by the  Hon. Julie Bishop MP, the former Minister for Education, Science and Training, on 4 April 2006, which details the implications of the Bologna Process for Australia. It also contains a host of background materials, including historical declarations and communiqués, relevant stocktaking reports and useful links.

The delivery of Australian courses and qualifications in other countries has undergone significant growth in recent years and will face greater opportunities in the future as education and training becomes increasingly globalised.  The Offshore Quality Taskforce has been consulting extensively with representatives of international students, each sector of the education and training industry, and State and Territory Governments to develop a Transnational Quality Strategy to ensure the high quality and integrity of Australian education and training, regardless of the location in which it is delivered. The Strategy will contribute to sustainable growth in social, cultural and other returns to Australia from delivering education and training to international students outside Australia. For more information see the Transnational Quality Strategy page on the AEI website.
