Grant-in-aid funding is provided to the Australian Academy of Science
; Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering
; Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia
; Australian Academy of the Humanities
and the National Academies Forum (NAF)
under an annual appropriation act. The grants assist the Academies promote research and scholarship and pursue activities in the national interest, including the provision of independent advice to the Government. The NAF was established to enhance the prestige and visibility of the Academies and promote their administrative efficiency.
Every five years the Australian Government examines the performance and funding relativities of the Learned Academies and NAF. The last review was conducted in 2005 and a copy of the report can be accessed from: 2005 Review of the Australian Learned Academies
In addition to grant-in-aid funding, the Academies are also eligible to apply for Special Projects Funding which is administered by the Australian Research Council
