AREN - Across the Pacific to the rest of the world

In November 2004 the 10Gbps dual link from Sydney to the west coast of the USA became operational.  Through peering arrangements with the Research and Education networks in North America, Asia and Europe, collaboration of Australian scientists with colleagues worldwide is much more possible.  It was through this link that the landing data from the Cassini-Huygens Mission to Titan collected by the Australian telescopes at Parkes and Mopra were relayed to mission headquarters in the Netherlands.  The AREN and its international capacity also enables researchers at Australian astronomy sites to communicate with researchers working on the Gemini telescopes in Hawaii and Chile, and to gather data from these remote instruments which represents a significant advance in research collaboration in this field.  (Trans-Pacific link announcement  You are now leaving the DEST website )
