AREN projects

Lead Institution Project

Commonwealth Funding

Charles Sturt University Access to the Australian Research and Education Network

This project will enable university campuses at Wagga Wagga and Bathurst, in particular, to access the AREN backbone.

$1,060,000

University of Wollongong Broadband Link from the University of Wollongong to AARNet

This project extended the AREN backbone from Sydney to Wollongong. Originally $4.2m was allocated to this project prior to the opportunity to access fibre on the Nextgen network. This event considerably reduced the cost of this project. Consequently $3.1m was re-directed towards the cost of lighting up the regional network.

$4,200,000

Monash University Victorian Education and Research Network

Stage 1 - Almost 100 research and education sites in and around metropolitan Melbourne will be connected to high bandwidth communications infrastructure. A high bandwidth link between Melbourne and the site where the proposed BassLink cable from Tasmania will terminate will also be provided.

$6,060,000

Stage 2 – This project is an extension of the AREN East Princes Backbone from Traralgon to Sale, possibly through Maffra, to Bairnsdale, and then to Lakes Entrance.

Both projects are collaborative ventures with the universities, CSIRO, the State government and AARNet. Partners are providing significant financial input to the project.

$3,000,000

James Cook University Sunshine Backbone

Stage 1 - A 2.5 Gbps backbone network from Brisbane to Townsville, via Rockhampton has been established.

$5,500,000

Stage 2 - This will provide an interim solution (for 3 years) for high bandwidth connections to the Sunshine Backbone of AREN for campuses in five regional centres in Queensland (JCU Cairns, CQU Mackay and Gladstone, USC Sippy Downs and USQ Hervey Bay).

$2,000,000

Murdoch University Perth to Mandurah Link
This project will provide high bandwidth links between the AREN and Murdoch University’s three campuses at South Street, Rockingham and Mandurah.  It will also benefit Edith Cowan University and enable its microwave equipment between Perth and Mandurah to better connect its campus at Bunbury with the Margaret River Campus.

$2,202,000

Flinders University of  Installation of a High Speed Advanced Network

South Australia Provision of a high speed network between the three SA university sites.

$500,000

South Australian Broadband Research and Education Network (SABRENet)

This project will establish an 80km north-south high-speed metropolitan network, connecting all major university campuses, teaching hospitals, South Australian government research facilities, the CSIRO and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation in South Australia.

$4,550,000

University of Tasmania Tasmanian Research and Education Network

This project will provide access to capacity on the Basslink fibre, linking Tasmania to the mainland, and contribute towards a high bandwidth backbone within Tasmania for higher education and research institutions.

$7,000,000

Australian Maritime College Upgrade of Information and Communications Technology Infrastructure

This provides a contribution towards the cost of accessing the AREN.

$210,000

Charles Darwin University Sturt Backbone

Provision of a 155Mbps link between AARNet PoP at Adelaide and Charles Darwin University, via Alice Springs

$3,455,000
