The Australian Government is providing $7 million towards the development of the Tasmanian Research and Education Network (TREN) which will utilise optic fibre provided by the Tasmanian Government on intra-state links and the Bass Link cable currently being laid across Bass Strait. In addition, the University of Tasmania and other stakeholders are contributing $5.75 million towards the project. (Tasmania announcement
