Survey of Former Teacher Education Students: A Follow-up to the Survey of Final Year Teacher Education Students

This publication reports the findings of the 2006 Survey of Former Teacher Education Students.  The survey is a ‘follow-up’ from the 2005 Survey of Final Year Teacher Education Students.  Those respondents who agreed to participate provided information on their current employment status, conditions of service, support offered, challenges faced and preparedness to teach.  Those not working as a teacher were asked to report the reasons.

Abstract

This survey is a ‘follow-up’ to the Survey of Final Year Teacher Education Students, undertaken by DEST during 2005.  Of the 1,875 final year teacher education students who participated in 2005, 1,189 provided contact details to enable their participation in further research (the follow-up survey).  A total of 693 responses were received when the follow-up survey was carried out in July 2006.

The follow-up survey, which is the subject of this report, sought information from respondents on:

  • their current employment status;
  • conditions of service if working as a teacher;
  • details of support offered to new teachers, challenges faced by them, and their views on preparedness to teach;
  • number of teaching jobs for which they had applied; and
  • reasons, if not working as a teacher.

The follow-up survey also repeated some questions from the first survey, to see whether respondents’ views had changed as a result of their experiences on issues such as:

  • perceptions of university education;
  • teaching career and longer-term career intentions; and
  • preparedness to do casual or relief teaching or work in rural/remote schools.
