Motivation and Engagement of Boys: Evidence-Based Teaching Practices
This report sets out to identify and describe evidence-based teaching practices which have proved effective in improving the motivation, engagement and academic and social outcomes of boys, particularly those boys at risk of disengaging from school-based learning activities.
Abstract
The report Motivation and Engagement of Boys: Evidence-based Teaching Practices arose from a research project funded by the Department of Education, Science and Training under the Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme. The project was undertaken by researchers mainly from the University of Western Sydney. The report uses a theoretically informed way of understanding the complex and interrelated individual, social and cultural relationships that students have with education, school and classrooms. The methodology for the project was primarily qualitative, involving a literature review and fifteen case studies examining particular practices within schools. These schools were selected on the basis of representing boys in the early and middle years of schooling and those considered at risk of underachieving, including boys from a low-performing, low-socio-economic background, Indigenous students, and those from rural and regional areas. The report generates a comprehensive, evidence-based set of principles and strategies aimed at improving boys’ socio- academic outcomes. The report highlights whole-school policies, practices and interventions that are designed to encourage every student to feel that their school is a place that “works for them”, and that education is opening up opportunities for them to be rewarded and successful. It proposes a number of recommendations to improve motivation, engagement and socio-academic achievement of boys.
