The Australian Government’s $19.4 million Success for Boys initiative aims to help schools across Australia improve boys’ learning outcomes and engagement with school.
In 2005, the Department engaged James Cook University and Curriculum Corporation to develop and trial professional learning materials for teachers working with boys in the compulsory years of schooling.
Over 2006-2007, Success for Boys provided up to 1,600 schools with average grants of $10,000 to take up professional learning in boys’ education and incorporate it in their daily practice. The Success for Boys Professional Learning Program focussed on the following key intervention areas of particular benefit to boys:
- Effective literacy teaching;
- The use of information and communication technology (ICT) as a means of improving boys’ engagement with active learning;
- Giving boys mentoring opportunities from both within and beyond the school; and
