The series of eight Innovation and Good Practice in Drug Education monographs draw from the findings of the National School Drug Education Strategy Innovation and Good Practice project. They have been developed to inform school principals and staff about the range of best practices, views and approaches for effective Australian school drug education.
Over ninety schools participated in the Innovation and Good Practice project. Each school reviewed, analysed and documented its drug education methods to determine what works best in the classroom. One of the main findings from the project was that student safety, engagement, connectedness, self-worth and resilience are vital elements of successful drug education. The ‘good practices’ identified in the project provide a range of understandings about how to better engage with students, help them to be connected to their schooling, and develop their capacities for resilience into adulthood.
Each monograph focuses on a particular theme to enhance a school’s own approach to drug education. Together, they provide direction to teachers so that they can concentrate their efforts to achieve the best results.
In addition to the monographs, the Innovation and Good Practice in Drug Education final report provides insight into a range of issues that impact on successful drug education. Student wellbeing, community support and school curriculum were among the issues explored.
