Local School Community Drug Summits
The Summits brought together school staff, students, parents and key community members to encourage stronger, broader and more integrated community engagement and support in addressing illicit and unsanctioned drug use by young people.
The Summits covered a wide variety of activities and formats including parent and community forums, information evenings, quiz nights, student presentations and presentations by experts in the field. While Summits addressed local issues, common themes included: awareness raising, building resilience, effects and harms of drugs, risk and protective factors, drug education policy, current issues facing young people, communicating with young people, local services, positive parenting and connectedness, developing community partnerships and creating safe environments.
The Australian Government developed and distributed Summit Supporting Materials to all Australian schools to assist in the conduct of the Local School-Community Drug Summits. The materials provided advice on summit plans, sample summit agendas, multi-media activity materials and a copy of the National Framework for Protocols for Managing the Possession, Use and/or Distribution of Illicit and Other Unsanctioned Drugs in Schools.
