Interstate Student Data Transfer Note
An Interstate Student Data Transfer Note system and set of protocols for their use were developed in 2005 by the Student Mobility Working Group of MCEETYA.
The Schools Assistance (Learning Together – Achievement Through Choice and Opportunity) Act 2004, requires all education authorities to “implement, before 1 January 2006, a consistent national system for the timely transmission between schools of student information relating to students moving interstate”.
The Interstate Student Data Transfer Note and protocols can be downloaded from the MCEETYA website

Students Move: Supporting Students Who Change Schools
Students Move, a joint project of DEST and the Department of Defence, was established to help schools, school systems and parents minimise the negative impacts that can be associated with students frequently changing schools. The project aimed to provide information and guidance to help address difficulties that may be faced by mobile students, their families and the schools that they attend. The key objectives of the project are: to identify and document best practice approaches to support and facilitate the adjustment of mobile students; to develop a strategy for the efficient and effective dissemination of best practice approaches; and to produce a guide for schools and systems.

Best Practice in Student Data Transfer
Student mobility which involves the transfer of students between schools can present challenges in relation to student learning. This project places a strong emphasis on student record information as a key to minimising the potential impact of mobility on student learning outcomes. The project identifies the most useful range of information to be collected by the Sending School and the most effective ways of transmitting this information to the Receiving School.

Changing Schools: Its Impact on Student Learning
The Department of Education, Science and Training and the Department of Defence engaged KPMG Consulting in association with the Australian Council for Educational Research, to complete a scoping study to assess the impact that frequent family relocation has on learning outcomes of school-aged children from the preparatory years to Year 12. This study focussed on the school-aged children of families that have experienced relocation, including those of the Australian Defence Force personnel.
