Information & Communication Technology (ICT) in Schools

The Australian Government promotes the comprehensive, effective and efficient use of ICT in school education so that Australian school students can fully contribute to and participate in a strong, responsive and competitive "ideas" economy.

To foster student ICT literacy, under the Government’s 2005-08 schools funding legislation, all states and territories have committed to the development of an ICT Statement of Learning by January 2006 and implementation by January 2008.  Statements of Learning describe the key knowledge, understandings, skills and capacities that each child should have the opportunity to acquire at school.  Under the same legislation, students across Australia are participating in a three-yearly national sample assessment  You are now leaving the DEST website   of students’ ICT skills and knowledge at Years 6 and 10 through MCEETYA’s Agreed Measurement Framework for reporting against the National Goals for Schooling.

Online Curriculum Content is an important priority for the Australian Government, which is providing $60 million over the eight financial years 2001-02 to 2008-09 to support the development of online curriculum resources, services and applications for Australian schools.

The Computer Technologies for Schools Project distributes surplus computers and other equipment to schools on a needs basis.
