Students with Disabilities: Their Literacy and Numeracy Learning

The Literacy, Numeracy and Students with Disabilities project was undertaken by researchers at the Schonell Special Education Research Centre at the University of Queensland, The Department of Special Education and Disability at Flinders University of South Australia and The Deafness Student Unit at the University of Melbourne. The primary purpose of the study was to investigate the provision of literacy and numeracy to students with disabilities in Australian primary schools.  The study focuses on teaching and learning strategies to improve literacy and numeracy levels for students in primary schools.

The report Literacy, Numeracy and Students with Disabilities was released by Dr Kemp in June 2000.  In his media release of 20 June 2000, Dr Kemp Stated that information about the report would be made available to every school in Australia.

A brochure, Students with Disabilities:  Their Literacy and Numeracy Learning documents some suggestions for practice in schools and classrooms based on the outcomes of the study, Literacy, Numeracy and Students with Disabilities.

The Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs has distributed the brochure to every primary school in Australia.
