Vocational learning and VET in Schools

Under the National Goals for Schooling in the Twenty First Century, a student will experience vocational learning at each year level throughout their compulsory schooling and have access to VET in Schools programmes in the post-compulsory years.

Vocational Learning

The definition of vocational learning under the MCEETYA Framework for Vocational Education in Schools, (2000) is:

  • General learning that has a vocational perspective. It includes elements such as generic employability skills, enterprise education, career education and community and work based learning.

VET In Schools

The definition of VET in Schools under the ANTA Principles and Guidelines You are now leaving the DEST website for Improving Outcomes for Vocational Education and Training in Schools is:

  • Vocational education and training should be included as VET in Schools if it is undertaken as part of a senior secondary certificate and its completion by the student provides credit towards a recognised VET qualification within the Australian Qualifications Framework.

Australian School-Based Apprenticeships

Australian School-based Apprenticeships provide the opportunity for young people to gain VET qualifications and undertake employment while also completing a senior secondary certificate. Under these arrangements  You are now leaving the DEST website   the student is both a full time student and part-time employee, with the same employment and training requirements as for other Australian Apprenticeships.

Structured Workplace Learning (Swl)

Structured Workplace Learning is considered to be a VET in Schools program course component situated within a real or simulated workplace, providing supervised learning activities contributing to an assessment of competency and achievement of outcomes relevant to the requirements of a particular Training Package or other AQFVET qualification.
