The Mining Careers Bursary Scheme has been offered to 30 Year 10 students in Western Australian schools in 2006 and seeks to encourage these students to consider a career in the mining industry through the bursaries and attendance at mining workshops in Years 11 and 12.

Key features of the Mining Careers Bursary Scheme are to:

  • encourage Year 10 school students in Western Australian schools in 2006 to enrol in and successfully complete mathematics and science subjects in Years 11 and 12; and
  • encourage students to consider a future career in the mining industry. This will be achieved through $500 bursaries payable per annum in Years 10, 11 and 12. Students will be required to attend two mining workshops at the Western Australian School of Mines, Kalgoorlie, one in Year 11 (2007) and one in Year 12 (2008); and
  • there will also be subsidised accommodation and a $500 bursary in the first year of undergraduate study for those students who successfully complete the Scheme in Years 10, 11 and 12. Students will need to have gained a place at Curtin University of Technology and enrolled in a mining industry related degree with the Western Australian School of Mines.

To be eligible to apply for a Bursary, a student must:

  • be enrolled and attending a Western Australian government or non-government school;
  • have successfully completed Year 9 mathematics and science subjects in 2005;
  • be undertaking Year 10 in 2006 at a Western Australian school and be studying mathematics and science subjects in Year 10 in 2006;
  • be intending to study these subjects in Year 11 in 2007 and Year 12 in 2008; and
