Title (36) Just boys, just girls and just schooling. Equity cross curriculum perspectives to support learning outcomes
Author
Details A South Australian document prepared by the Gender Equity Curriculum Policy Directorate and found at www.sacsa.sa.edu.au/index_fsrc.asp?t=ECCP&ID=E3.1A2
Description The paper deals with the relationship between gender and disruptive and violent behaviour with a more specific focus on: gender and violence, social development of boys and girls and homophobia. The paper discusses the five steps (based on the model prepared by Professor Connell) which schools can take to address the links between gender, behaviour management and curriculum as well as a discussion of the work of a number of project schools in addressing such issues.
Target market Primary teachers, secondary teachers
Purpose and/or Outcomes To promote professional discussion about ways to address behavioural issues in the context of curriculum, teaching and learning and the promotion of high-quality gender identity and relations, which will lead to improved academic and social learning outcomes.
Possible Applications Can be used by all eductors at all education sites including early years settings (childcare, kindergartens and child parent centres).
Additional information The paper uses the workshop outline developed by Professor R.W. Connell, Developing school-based, research-informed responses to issues about boys and masculinity(August 1999, unpublished). The outline describes a process that schools could use to address issues of behaviour management, curriculum and gender equity. The paper also uses examples of work undertaken in the Curriculum, Behaviour Management and Gender Project based on the experiences of learners and educators to illustrate the ideas put forward.
