Report and summary of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers Highly Accomplished Teachers of Mathematics project.
This is a report of a project undertaken by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) with funding from the Australian Government Quality Teaching Programme. The purpose of the project was to further develop, trial, implement and evaluate a model for assessing the performance of math teachers against the AAMT’s Standards for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics in Australian Schools (2002). The project designed a three stage teacher evaluation model and then trialled the model with 6 teachers. The assessment process involved participating in formal assessment tasks at an Assessment Centre, undertaking a structured one hour interview with an evaluator, and submitting a portfolio of work. Four of the six teachers who were assessed successfully met the required standards and were recommended to receive the Highly Accomplished Teachers of Mathematics award. Two teachers were advised that they had presented insufficient evidence that they met the standards. The project also provided training for assessors, prepared guidelines to assist candidates prepare their portfolio items and developed appeal mechanisms for unsuccessful candidates.
