Abstract

In the mid 1980s, general initiatives to improve students’ literacy and numeracy learning outcomes for students with learning difficulties were introduced as ‘first wave’ intervention strategies.  These strategies focussed on curriculum materials and teacher professional development for students in their first three years of schooling.  ‘Second wave’ strategies continued this initial work but with minimal follow-up assistance requiring ongoing or ‘third wave’ intervention support beyond those first three years.  This project conducted research that aimed to improve the literacy and numeracy outcomes of students with learning difficulties, evaluate ‘third wave’ intervention programmes and teaching strategies that improve the literacy and numeracy achievements of students with learning difficulties in Years 4, 5 and 6.
