Project to Investigate Improving Literacy and Numeracy Outcomes of Distance Education Students in the Early Years of Schooling

The research report on the Project to Investigate Improving Literacy and Numeracy Outcomes of Distance Education in the Early Years of Schooling is in two volumes and examines effective support for distance education students in early years of schooling to maximise literacy and numeracy outcomes. Volume1 contains the Executive Summary, Methodology and Key Findings and Recommendations. Volume 2 contains Data and Research Instruments used.

I-Spi is a guide for home tutors and teachers working with young children in remote or rural locations. It contains practical ideas and strategies for teaching literacy and numeracy.

Abstract

This report provides a comprehensive overview of distance education services provided to students in their early years of schooling who are living in rural and remote areas and undertaking education at home. It provides information on the nature and extent of literacy and numeracy support provided to these students including current use of information and communication technology in distance education and its potential to promote literacy and numeracy. The report also provides insight into the dual roles of the teacher/tutor and parent. The project examined the role of home tutors and supervisors through interviews with personnel from State and Territory distance education providers, principals, teachers, home tutors and children. The project investigated literacy and numeracy teaching and learning and the use of information and communication technologies in distance education through review and analysis of relevant literature, reports and new initiatives recently implemented.

The I-Spi Shared Practical Ideas Guide is a resource for home tutors and schools of distance education and provides effective literacy and numeracy strategies, websites, and reading lists to assist them support their students and access professional development.  The guide also provides information and websites on using ICT to support young children develop literacy and numeracy skills.
