Abstract

The Australian Government has identified 24 locations across the country for the establishment of Australian Technical Colleges for year 11 and 12 students to further address the pressing skill shortages which Australia currently faces in a number of traditional trades.  This discussion paper is the first step in community consultation on the operation of these colleges.  It is intended to inform organisations interested in establishing one of these technical colleges by way of answering a series of questions on the colleges.  It considers issues such as:

  • why the Australian Government is establishing Australian Technical Colleges;
  • the operation of the Australian Technical Colleges;
  • the role of industry;
  • when the Australian Technical Colleges will start taking students;
  • the differences between Australian Technical Colleges and other schools and registered training organisations, including TAFEs;
  • the typical school-based New Apprenticeships scenario in an Australian Technical College;
  • the courses to be offered by Australian Technical Colleges;
  • who can study at an Australian Technical College and the qualifications students can attain;
  • the amount of public funding that will be provided and how funding will be allocated;
  • what it will cost to attend an Australian Technical College;
  • who will run the Australian Technical Colleges; and
  • where the Australian Technical Colleges will be located.
