An ethic of care: effective programmes for beginning teachers

This report aims to improve the preparation and support of beginning teachers. It identifies principles and practices that effectively address their needs.

Abstract

This project was commissioned by the Department of Education, Science and Technology through the strategic national element of the Quality Teacher Programme.  It sought to improve the preparation and support of beginning teachers in Australia by identifying their needs and by recognising principles and practices that are effective in assisting them to make the transition from initial training to teaching in schools.  Research undertaken for the project consisted of a literature review, surveys, and focus group discussions with first and second year teachers and their supervisors from the Government Education system, the Catholic system and the Independent sector in each state and the ACT.  The research canvassed: key themes and issues in the literature of the last decade; involvement in induction by systems and districts; school level induction; and pre-service training.  The report provides the research findings from this project and outlines the key purposes, principles and management of induction for beginning teachers.  It includes a number of recommendations for possible national projects and for methods of disseminating this report.
