A History of State Aid to Non-government Schools in Australia

A history of funding to non-government schools in Australia since colonial times and its evolution since World War II. The book covers key reforms under the Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke, Keating and Howard governments.

Abstract

Federal funding to non-government schools has been a feature of successive Federal Governments for the past four decades. While there are a number of histories on the development of schooling, there are no readily available references on the history of Federal Government funding that draw together the numerous threads of the subject into one volume. This work will contribute to community understanding of this important issue.

This work captures new evidence from key participants in the field, from both sides of the political spectrum, and combines it with existing secondary sources. The book covers the origins of state aid to non-government schools and its evolution since the Second World War covering key periods of reform from Colonial origins to state aid under the Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke and Keating governments, and state aid reforms under the Howard government.
