Research on Career Change Pathways into Teaching

The research report explored the nature of career change initiatives across Australia.  The project found that there were two initiatives currently operating in Australia in 2006 - the New South Wales Accelerated Teacher Training Programme; and the Victorian Career Change Programme.

Abstract

The report surmises that targeted initiatives do encourage and support career change.  Targeted initiatives appear to be effective at enabling education authorities to work with universities to prioritise recruitment around specific areas of need.

The research also found that career change programmes are generally effective in delivering on their stated objectives to appoint teachers to difficult to staff locations and to address shortages in specialisations across the curriculum.

The report recommends that any future career change initiatives be designed in consultation with registration/accreditation bodies and education providers, to ensure that courses meet the needs of all parties.
